Getting ready for window painting. Here's a picture of me last year. It's a lot of work/fun. Window painting for me used to be a huge money maker for me and my family. We paid a lot of debt off with that seasonal money, and have always had great Christmas's. The past couple of seasons have been strongly affected by the down economy. Since the recession the small family owned business has slowly dwindled. I don't know what this year will bring.

I was taught the skill by my mother when I was 14. I am now 28. I can't think of life without Holiday Window Painting.

The business now consists of mainly Meleah, my sister-in-law, and I. We have always been blessed by the sacrifices our families make for the one or two weeks we spend painting. Hopefully this year we will be blessed also.

Happy Birthday to me. It's my birthday tomorrow. 28. I figured it's about time I put together a list of things I want to accomplish by the time I'm 30.

1. Show my art in an exhibit. I just started making art a month or so ago. Well restarted since I've been married. I didn't realized how much I missed it. It would be incredibly brave to show my stuff as a professional. I am an extremely critical of what is called art these days.
2. Turn my etsy shop into a real income. This is something I have been trying at for a while. I just need to put in 100%.
3. Learn how to exercise on a regular basis. I suck at exercising. I would love to be slim and tone, I just love chips and movies more than vanity.
4. Plant a garden. I wanted to this before summer, but I was too late. I love plants. I would love to grow my own food, or just flowers. It reminds me of my dad. He was a landscaper.
5. Go see the redwoods. In my married life the furthest vacation I've had is the beach, but just a little bit farther is the place I've been wanting to go for years.
6. Get an Associates degree. Something I've already started, and totally doable.
7. Illustrate a childrens book. I love illustrations. I have been thinking of this for a very long time also.
8. Read the Bible in it's entirety. I've already started this. Some places are a hard read. I've read most of the Bible, but would love to read it from cover to cover.
9. Watch The Godfather. Here it's awesome. I have yet to partake.
10. Get a tan. This might seem lame. I don't get to go out in the sun much. I don't like tanning beds that much. This mostly represents the time I get to myself outside, not watching my kids. I also love the feel of the sun, and with the amount of sun that I get, I'm not afraid of skincancer or wrinkles being an issue.

Some of these things are kinda ridiculous. I don't care, it's my list.

I painted this a few weeks ago. I've found that I really love watercolor. I'll be pretty busy with the art classes I'm taking, so I won't have any time to paint for a little while. I did some pretty awesome gesture drawings in art 101. I turned the best ones in already, or you would be looking at them right now.

I'm pretty nervous about school. I've forgotten how to write an essay in English. I'm ready to fall asleep in my art 102 class. It's at 6 p.m. I'm taking a sculpture class on Saturday. I don't know if I have enough time for that one. They want me to put a lot of myself into those sculptures, so I'm nervous and excited to see what happens there.

It was Ella's first day of kindergarten today. Graham was really worried about being left out. We packed him a backpack too and let him come along to drop her off. Ella was grumpy when I picked her up. She is not used to waking up early. It will be a big adjustment for all of us.

It was my first day back in school also. English 102 & Art 102 today. I'm happy to spend the time to better myself. I really appreciate it this time around. I don't feel it's a huge sacrifice for my family like beauty school was. This is for me. There is something very special about that now that I am a mom. I don't feel selfish. I feel intelligent and privileged. Thank you little family for letting me go back to school.

Ella's Birthday dress turned out to be the best so far. I used this pattern. I didn't even have to alter it. It was missing the waistband and tie, so I rigged something up. I'm so proud.

Ella's Birthday has been awesome so far. We had a party this afternoon. I curled their hair and put on their makeup. My favorite thing I did was make capes for them to get ready in, like they were in a salon. (made out of vintage sheets of course) They also got to pick out a headband. 5 was the perfect number. Oh, I also printed out some faces for them to put makeup on. It was a huge hit!

So It is Done. I started this quilt while I was pregnant with Graham. I finished it just before his birthday in December.
Yes this beautiful quilt is lying in my driveway in this picture. My house has very little windows and my grass has quite a bit of dog poop on it. No, I don't have a dog, but i do have shitty neighbors. Any way getting back too awe and amazement - I love this quilt. It makes me so happy that I've made something so awesome for my kid. It never works out that way. I make lots of things for everyone else, but not this time. It's wearing pretty well too. It's already been through many washes.

I also pieced together 2 other circles of this Sendak illustration. It only took me a year and half to finish this one, we'll see when I share the others with the world.

I had a ton of tiny scraps from making banners from vintage handkerchiefs. I discovered I had enough tiny scraps to make about 20 tiny banners. They turned out really great. Ella loved posing for me. I promised her one for her room.

So I've been thinking a lot about this girl lately. Her name is Arianna. I met her a couple of times when she was just a baby before she got a type of cancer I know little about. She is my cousin Haley's daughter. Up in the picture she's hanging out with her dad, Travis. I really like this picture. She died this past Sunday. I'm going up to the funeral on Saturday.

I grew up with Haley. She taught me a lot about sewing. Just how to crap it together mostly. She married very, very young. We weren't as close after that, mostly because she married at 16 & I think I was 14 then. She grew up fast, I didn't. She has 5 kids including her Ari. She had a baby during Ari's treatment. She wants a lot of kids, even though she almost dies every time she has one. Haley has always been miles ahead of me.

I think that having a small child die (she was 3) must be quite a sacred experience. Only a handful of people really got to know this special girl. I didn't know her. I can't help but be a little jealous, and happy for the people who got to share this special experience. I think of my young kids, age 1 & 4, I know the best parts of them. I can't help but be thankful for the special bond we have.

I have a scewed view on death. My Dad's death was the most sacred experience of my life. I've never felt closer to the Lord. I knew that God called him home, like he was hand picked for a calling on the other side. It still hurts that he's gone. It's been 10 years. My Dad has been gone 10 years. He's missed so much. The only way to really comfort myself on him not knowing my kids is that maybe he's hand delivering them to me. This is a bad time to think of all this. I'm totally sobbing uncontrollably. My dad loved kids. He would have loved being a grandpa. When I held graham close, our special moments when I breastfed him, I felt that my dad knew him. I felt that the love of my father just channeled through him to me every time he looked at me, or melted into my chest. Having my children has been the most healing experience. I can't imagine having having one of them ripped away from me.

I don't believe in original. I'm really unsure if anyone cares I'm awesome.

I've been really nervous about blogging again. Last year I had a baby, but that's not the reason I haven't been back. I did a custom order for someone on etsy. I copied a dress. I did an amazing job. I shared the finished product with flickr. All of the sudden everyone cared about the copied dress. It was even on a craft magazine blog. I am very talented. I thought I had finally gotten some deserved recognition for being awesome.

I guess I'm telling you the rest for myself. This is my place to post my things and the things I care about, and it was taken over by anonymous assholes. Apparently the folks over at Daydream nation didn't like that their idea was copied. Up there is the picture I posted theirs on the left, mine on the right. I didn't know what daydream nation was. That photo was supplied to me. I posted on this blog stating pretty obviously, "look at this dress I copied." I couldn't stop the hate mail from coming. The guy who designed the dress even posted, under anonymous so I will never really be sure if it was him though I'm pretty sure it was. The whole air mail line was for his father who had passed. Under his comment, and others that were by far the rudest I had been addressed in my whole life, I wrote a short apology. The hate mail kept coming. I erased the post.

I'm not sorry for making the dress. I didn't break the law. "You should be ashamed to call yourself a designer" someone wrote. I was and still am surprised at how hurt I am by the comments of people who live on the other side of the planet and never told me their names. I am not ashamed. I made a dress for someone who couldn't find where the dress was sold. Daydream nation never told me where you could buy the dress so I could pass it on.

I have had success though. My OWN idea. I make vintage handkerchiefs into flag buntings. One that I made will be featured in Bride magazine in March. These have since been copied. It was copied by THeinoriginals ironically. I don't think they copied me, though they could have. I think it was more like a couple of ideas I had that that had already been thought up. I could have sworn I was so damn creative too. I thought of making cone gnomes, and making gift bows out of VHS tape. Both ideas already taken. I don't really believe in original.

I found a ton of fabric at the thrift store the other day. I am selling a bunch of it for $2 a yard on etsy. For all my friends in vegas, I can hook you up with a better deal if you see something you like. I'm mostly trying to break even. I kept a few pieces. Also I cut up some of the sheets I've been collecting into fat quarters.

Home Made presents for Ella's Birthday

Vintage pillowcase dresses for Ella. These were so easy. I made them each in like 20 min. Here is a link on how to make a similar dress.

I also made her this tinkerbell outfit. I like making her barbie clothes, because I know they will last. Barbie hands rip out the sleeves of those cheaper barbie clothes all of the time. The wings are already coming apart, but they are just whip stitched on. I think I will take them off and and make ones out of tights and a wire hanger to slip on over her shoulders with elastic.

She wasn't very enthusiastic when she received the home made presents at her party, but hopefully they will last a long time, and she will remember when she's older.

So I never saw fabric banners like I saw my sister-in-law Candace's on Etsy. They were so adorable they inspired me to make ones out of vintage handkerchiefs. That was about 1 year ago, and they are finally finished. Sparklepower on the left, and LiliaRose on the right.

Ella's birthday party pictures

Behind her are streamers with white balloons at the top. It was overcast. I thought it would look like a raining cloud, but it didn't. Stacey made the awesome cake. It tasted awesome.
I love the girls in this picture. Katlyn was shaking with excitement, and you can see Makayla wants to open presents too.
I made a flounder pinata that the kids kicked. Some of the moms were nervous, but no one got hurt. I still stand by what a genious idea it was.
I forget how excited kids get for parties. I love the restraint that it took for just Ella to blow out the candles. Noah seems to be just as happy blowing into mom's hand.

All in all it was a good party. The kids had a good time. I got some good pistures of the kids. A few are on my flickr. Text me your email if you want to see more.

Ella's Birthday dress

Ella picked out the fabric and everything. She made me guess what was in her pockets today. I really wanted her to know how old she is today. I thought the giant 3 would do the trick.

The best part of this picture is Ella's knee. She still has a fat crease from when she was a baby. Long body short legs. Also Ella casually used this picture to flip the bird. Another P.S. I rushed to finish this dress this morning so we could go out in it on her actual birthday, and ended up putting the zipper in backwards. I'll have to flip it before her party on Saturday.

Deer MAsk

So I finally finished this special order. This is probably the project I dreaded the most. I think I am done with Custom orders for a while. I am thinking about sharing this pattern that I came up with.
Construction: I made this out of polyester suede. I found some sheer black for the eyes. I cut up a wire hanger for the antlers. I used the thickest fusible interfacing I could find. This is a copy of a mask in The Mates of State video "get better".

I accepted a custom order on etsy. A deer mask copy from the video "get better" by Mates of State. I finished the pattern today. I made a head from cardboard and tape, and pinned some fabric to it. We shall see.

Ella is learning to ride a bike. She has a lot of me in her though. She is afraid of everything. Pedaling is too hard.
I also found this picture. I cropped it down so you could see the punk face she is making.

Something new

I added some blocks to my etsy store today. They feature the illustrations of Richard Scarry and Amy Butler. I have 10 sets of this "series" that have so-called careers on them. It is from a vintage book, so all of the job characters are very gender correct. My favorite careers are witch, indian, and tourist, so if you are buying these for your children they don't have to set their goals too high.

One of the the "careers" is mother. In a school performance all of my class got up and told the school and parents what they would be when they grow up. I picked this one. Not a very popular pick. It look me 20 years to figure out I could pick something else. I'm here anyway.

I finally finished this awesome messenger bag. I loved it so much, that I am working on three smaller versions.

I was inspired by Wonder Woman's costume. The front flap is the torso. The strap is the arms (including arm band and bullet ricochet detail). The inside front pockets are modeled after her boots. Seams are encased in WW's lasso of truth. The best detail is the applique of WW herself. I wanted her to be my own desogn, but still the same iconic WonderWoman.

This was a huge undertaking, and will for sure be the only one of it's kind. The 3 I am working on now are note book sized and will not include zippers, The awesome wonder woman applique, or the bullet appliques on the strap.

I am also including a vintage cross-stitched cotton square neck collar. It is all held in a Swedish gingersnap tin. It still smells like gingersnaps.

I am moving at the end of the month, so I'm adding more of my own hoarded things to my etsy shop. Next stop is to go through my ribbon and fabric. I've been storing all of my thrift store finds like they are gold, so it's time to spread the wealth. I'm selling all of it really cheap in hopes to get rid of it quicker. These and about thirty other patterns are $2 + buy five get one free.

Gavi came over today

Ella's friend Gavi came over and spent the day with her while Gavi's mom was at work. They had a blast. Ella loves Gavi so much. There is quite a bit of an age difference, but Ella's mom doesn't hang out with any other moms with girls.

I took pictures of them in the play area by my house. I have about 200 more photos. I always get carried away. Good news is I finally got some great pictures of ella in her Halloween costume. I can't believe she still fits in it.

Ella's Easter Dresses

I made 2 Easter dresses for Ella because they were so easy, well actually I made 4. These 2 dresses are reversible. The other side is vintage sheet prints that are equally cute. Candace would be proud. Every mom who owns a sewing machine should make their little girl this dress.
This is the pattern I used. Instead of cutting out backing, I cut out 2 fronts, and 2 backs. Only 4 pieces!! Sew the sides like they are 2 different dresses, and then you put the two together and sew around the top. Flip it right side out (this can be a little tricky). Top stitching optional. Then hem the two together. Last add buttons.

If I could go back, I would use big sew on snaps and sew them on first (that way there would be no show of stitching on the button. I put a button on each side, and it's a little tricky to button)

I actually think it is just as much work to make it reversible as it is to make this dress period. This should be a two hour sewing project even for novice seamstresses.
My nephew Sam has a matching tie. Made out of some cleverly wrapped together fabric and elastic.

Ella's first painting

Ella really wanted to paint with me today. I went and painted the set of Savior of the World without her. If you go see it I painted the rock, the door, and the Ship (Not that I want any credit or anything).

We painted afterword outside, which is something i wanted to let her do for a long time. She's no Marla. I guess I need more help from Marla's dad on how to coach my kid into awesome abstract painting. Marla was 3. Ella's 2 1/2. I guess we still have time.

Anyway, she had an awesome time. She put so much pink into that paint, that the paint ran purplypink everywhere. She also kept saying "tada" like she was putting on a show for us. I put more pictures on flickr.

P.S. If you don't already notice, that is a very big girl still wearing a diaper. What you don't know is that this is a very stubborn girl who's still wearing a diaper. Any suggestions would be great.
Also I don't want to hear you are a better mom than me in this category, because I already know it's true.

I really wanted her to love these faker tattoos I got her, but I had to take them away. She would have tattooed her whole body. I decided a girl with as little skin as she does only needs 4. One for each limb. I think she tried to stick one on her chest though, It looks like someone squashed a spider there.
She lives in a different world.

I finally took some pictures of Ella. I didn't bother to do her hair though.

This is the latest of my fashion creations. Roxanna just sent me this picture. She is my sponsor and my inspiration. I think it is beautiful. Here are some little details I put in if you are interested to know. The fan is actually a pocket. The pink Cake closes and opens to reveal "let them eat Cake", and the mint green cake can double as a coin pocket.

My nephew: Samuel Gene The Brave Smith. Wouldn't we all love to have a name that includes the word the, may or may not need a comma or quotation marks, and insinuates how awesome you are.

I started taking pictures because I wanted one of him eating a peanut butter sandwich. (He pronounces it peener butter, but he says it so fast his mom hasn't noticed yet). I then got picture after picture of him putting on a performance for the camera. I did not coach him. He is only 3 years old. Sam you are brave.

There are few things in this life worth living for alone. I would say chips are one of those things. I love love love chips. My favorites include (not in any certain order): Baked Cheetos, Spicy Nacho Doritos, Salsa Verde Doritos, Jalepeno Chips from Subway, Simply Salted Dirty chips, Sea Salt and Pepper Dirty Chips, Marilyn's Fiesta mix Tortilla Chips. If you are a chip conoseiur I recommend trying some of these. Do it for me.

Soooo...All I can think about is food. Huston & I started a diet yesterday. Chips are obviously not on it. You know what ironically is? Salsa.

I found this really awesome music book a while ago. I ended up cutting it up and selling it framed. They turned out really awesome. I really regret cutting it up. It's all okay now though. I found that book and another book illustrated by the same illustrator, Val Samuelson. I just got them in the mail today. Music 'Round the Clock is the book I took illustrations from. I am really obsessive about my childrens books. I don't know if any of my books deserve the kind of respect I give them. My husband could probably use some of that attention.

So Life is going pretty great for me. Yesterday I got a ton of free Cosmetics. Thank you Cosmeticssettlement.com. I also got $30 from a survey I took yesterday. Huston took it too, but I spent the money on going out to eat with Meleah. Also Someone used the best pick-up line on me ever. The dude said "You can't teach gorgeous." I usually shrug off random dudes attention, but come on that is awesome. Barack Obama is president. It really feels like my birthday.

I also finished some button necklaces for etsy. There is a ton of jewelry on etsy, but I really like these. If they don't sell I will just keep them.

I also made this Halloween Costume for a little girl here in Las Vegas. Her Name is Holly. Her Mom Makes Purses on Etsy as Solsisters. Holly Wanted to be Princess Zelda. I made her dress from a skirt I found at the thrift store. I painted the design on the skirt. I made the top out of some stretch velvet. I made the armor out of gold satin covered foam. I machine appliqued the apron and the armor. It took forever, but this costume was better than the one offered on the internet for $400 dollars. The only things I didn't make are the headpiece or ears and the pendant in the middle of her chest.

So I was really into doing custom orders on Etsy. I wanted to show some of the things I've done. I did this Harlequin Hat for someones Halloween costume. It is fully lined. The fabric was stretchy enough I didn't need any notions, which was a lifesaver. I also couldn't have done it without this foam form. I think it turned out awesome.

So I am starting a blog. I finished some blocks today. Richard Scarry illustrated a wonderful book called "Best word book ever." It has the best tiny images for blocks that are 1 1/2".
